Imagine, if you will, Whiplash starring Zach Galfianakis. No, not as Miles Teller’s drumming prodigy. Instead, imagine the funnyman as screaming J.K. Simmons, Teller’s erstwhile instructor. We have phenomenal news. You won’t have to imagine it any longer. Galifianakis teamed with St. Vincent and John Legend to produce this legitimately funny promotion for 7-Inches For Planned Parenthood.
“This isn’t going to get us any clicks!” Galifianakis yells, worried that they might not generate enough money for Planned Parenthood.
He drops in useful advice like, “Alternate the las” and that they should scream the “la"s like they had contracted an STI.
7-Inches for Planned Parenthood is a vinyl and digital release featuring music, comedy, and poetry from artists such as Foo Fighters, Mary J. Blige, Bon Iver, Common, Sleater-Kinney, Sarah Silverman, and Chvrches. Proceeds from the sale will go to benefit Planned Parenthood, which has come under serious threat as arch-conservative members of the Freedom Caucus seek to defund the organization with pretty much every bill that crosses their desks.
"Lawmakers with extreme views are working hard to shut down Planned Parenthood,” the group writes in a post to their official page. “If they succeed, millions of Americans will lose access to basic health services, including STD testing and treatment, birth control, and life-saving cancer screenings. 7-inches for Planned Parenthood is a response to this threat. This curated series of 7-inch vinyl records is being made by a group of people who believe that access to health care is a public good that should be fiercely protected. Do we know there’s a joke in the name? We do. We hope the title evokes the rich history of 7-inch vinyl records as a medium for protest music and resistance.”
