We’ve yet to see the dreaded Night King on this season of Game of Thrones, but that’s likely to change in episode five, which is ominously called “Eastwatch”. The title is a reference to Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, a castle and port at the easternmost point of the wall. Up to now, it’s only been mentioned in passing and never seen. In season one, Jeor Mormont told Jon Snow that four wights were discovered there, and in season seven, Jon Snow deployed the Free Folk to man the castle. Could it be that he thinks it’s where the White Walkers will strike next? Keep in mind that Eastwatch is the closest castle to Hardhome, and we all remember what happened there. If the White Walkers take Eastwatch, it could spell doom for Westeros.
If there is a battle on the horizon—and we expect there will be—Jon Snow has some travelling to do. HBO has released new photos from the upcoming episode that, among other things, show Jon Snow back at Dragonstone chit-chatting with Daenerys Targaryen. Another photo shows him walking along the shores of the island. Hopefully he’s looking for the nearest water taxi station to take him north.
Other photos show Tyrion Lannister walking among the ruins of last week’s battle, possibly searching for his brother Jamie; Cersei sitting on a bed either contemplating her army’s crushing defeat or trying to remember where she put her phone charger, and Samwell Tarly and Gilly cramming for their next exam (macroeconomics are a killer!)
Notice how HBO conveniently left out any images of Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, which makes it even more likely that a major clash with the White Walkers is on the way. Oh what fun.
