The consummation of Jon and Dany’s relationship on Sunday’s season finale of Game of Thrones should have been a cause for celebration. The show’s creators had been upping the sexual tension between our two central heroes with each passing episode, which made that late night boat hookup feel like the perfect culmination of a season full of sex eyes. Unfortunately, Jon and Dany are going to have to slap a big ‘ol “It’s complicated” on their relationship status.

As we were watching what it looks like when two immaculately constructed human beings scissor, we were also being reminded that Jon and Dany are related. We’re not talking fourth cousin by marriage-related. Jon Snow is the son of Ned’s sister, Lyanna, and her husband Rhaegar Targaryen, who happens to be the older brother of Daenerys Targaryen. That means Jon Snow is Dany’s nephew, which makes that otherwise titillating booty call kind of gross.

If you felt uncomfortable watching it, imagine what it was like for Kit Harrington and Emilia Clarke, who were charged with the task of making incest look sexy. Admittedly, that’s not a novel ask on Game of Thrones. In one of HBO’s post-episode breakdowns, Harrington and Clarke do little to hide the fact that shooting that scene was actually gag-worthy. But as Harrington explains, there was no way around it.

“I think they both know it’s wrong, I think they both know it’s gonna cause problems, but it’s that thing—when you suddenly feel that deeply about someone, and you go through those events together; it’s like a runaway train,” he said. “You can’t stop it happening.”

Jon and Dany can be excused for looking like they were two teenagers who’s parents left them home alone for the weekend, but how should the rest of us feel? In the real world, legendary anthropologist Claude Levi Strauss called the incest taboo central to civilization; it forces the man to mate outside the home. It’s not exactly accepted in Westeros, either. Jamie and Cersei’s relationship provoked revulsion both in the show’s universe and among audiences. And a large swath of the viewing public reacted to Jon and Dany’s hook up the same way. But they have the cloak of ignorance working in their favor, whereas Cersei and Jamie did not. It will be interesting to see whether or not these two moral beacons continue their relationship once they learn the truth, and if so, will they become the poster children for a new kind of representation of incest in pop culture? We already know that pornography Until then, let’s let Jon and Dany enjoy themselves. It’s a long ride to Winterfell.
