With Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn finally happening, it got me thinking: what other games are taking forever to get to us? There’s a long list of games that stopped short in the development phase and never met the light of day—looking at you, Star Wars 1313! Even though some of them may be unlikely, these are the top five games, omitting Half-Life 3, that need to come out right now.AGENT

After the massive success of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, Sony announced in July of 2007 that Rockstar Games would be developing a first-person stealth action video game exclusively for the PS3. There’s been little to no information about the actual gameplay, apart from the fact that it will be set in the Cold War and, according to a Rockstar press release, that the game “will take players into a world of counter-intelligence, espionage and political assassinations.“

Is it ever coming out?

This game hasn’t been on the front burner, and admittedly, Rockstar Games have had their work cut out for them by publishing some of the best games of the last few years. But distributors Take-Two Interactive confirmed in May 2011 that Agent was still in development by Rockstar North.

While some believe that Rockstar hid an Agent Easter egg in GTA V, using the game’s name on the number plate of one of the high-end cars, the only solid evidence that we’ll be seeing Agent anytime soon is the fact that Take-Two Interactive recently registered two trademarks for the game. Only time will tell if we’ll ever get to espionage our way around the Cold War. THE LAST GUARDIAN

Previously referred to by its working title, Project Trico, this Sony Computer Entertainment game has been in development since 2007. The game was formally announced at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo with a planned 2011 release exclusively for the PlayStation console. Since the official announcement, the game has suffered a series of setbacks, including the game’s director and designer, Fumito Ueda, leaving Sony, though he’s still on board as a consultant for the project. Sony has now left the release date and platform in question.

Unlike Agent, we know a lot about how this game works. This third-person perspective game follows the relationship between a young boy and a large, feathered creature named Trico. Combining action, adventure and puzzle elements, this is a game that has a lot of people waiting with bated breath. The trailer that leaked in May 2009 and the extended cut at that year’s E3 satisfied us for a while, but since then it’s only been bad news.

*Is it ever coming out? *

On February 13 it was announced that a significant amount of work on the game had to be redone. On June 11 2013 at E3, the CEO of Sony said that the development was on hiatus, yet Yoshida later commented to Kotaku that the game remains in active development and asked audiences to be patient. BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL 2

While the status of this highly anticipated sequel was unknown for several years, it was finally announced in Paris at Ubidays in 2008 that it was indeed happening. But since then, doubt and rumors have swirled about the title. In 2010, a French website claiming to have insider information said that Michel Ancel was leaving Ubisoft Montpellier, which was, thankfully, denied by representatives of the company.

*Is it ever coming out? *

After that announcement, not much came out about the game for two years. It was only in 2013 that Ubisoft’s CEO confirmed that the game was still active but coming along slowly due to Ancel’s commitments to other major franchises. Ancel spoke to IGN about the much anticipated sequel later that year, confessing that the ambition was too grand for the old-gen consoles. Now that the new consoles are out, we hope that Ubisoft is willing to try again!LEFT 4 DEAD 3

After fans from the Reddit Dota 2 community went on a tour of Valve, Left 4 Dead 3 was kind of confirmed thanks to a photo of a screen showing, upon further inspection, a task for Left 4 Dead. Now there’s not much else to say about Left 4 Dead 3, apart from the fact that it is one of many third installments from the developers at Steam Corporation we’re still waiting for, but it was worth mentioning since it’s not every day that fans leak a story in the gaming industry rather than journalists or bloggers.

Is it ever coming out?

While there have been “inside sources” confirming that the leaks are true and a Left 4 Dead 3 is in the works, it’s all we have for now. Some recent rumblings have been worried that because of Clint Hockey’s departure from Valve—rumors have it that his main project was the yet to be announced Left 4 Dead 3—the fate of the game may be unknown for a little while longer. FALLOUT 4

To end things on a good note, we’re going to finish our list with Fallout 4. Late last year, the gaming blog Kotaku acquired leaked documents associated with the voice acting call. While the word “Fallout” was never used in the documents, it was quite clear what the script was for, with the references to Fallout lore, nuclear fire and, of course, the fact that the first page started with “War. War never changes,” the classic intro used in the beginning of the first two games. It’s good to know that we’re finally getting some new Fallout goodness, in Boston of all places!

Is it ever coming out?

This is the first confirmation that we’re going to be getting another game from the Fallout franchise, but it has been speculated that Bethesda has been working on the game since The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. We can’t wait to hear an official date announcement on this title; here’s hoping it comes out sooner than the others on our list!
