Guys, I’m an entertainment journalist, which means I watch a lot of movie trailers, which means that some days it’s very easy for me to give into “This is just a marketing tool designed by advertisers to get me to buy a ticket” cynicism. Then, there are days like today, when a new trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight comes out.
Tarantino’s second Western assembles what might be the best cast he’s ever had (and that’s saying something) for what looks to be a story of bounty hunting, suspicion, and lots of six shooters pointed at people. The first trailer, which dropped in August, was really more about setting a tone, but the second gives us a little more of a plot. The Hangman (Kurt Russell, sporting the most magnificent mustache I’ve ever seen) is taking his prisoner (Jennifer Jason Leigh, who gets the trailer’s most badass line) in to hang, and thus collect the bounty. The trouble is, a blizzard means he has to spend a little time under the same roof with a bunch of dangerous people (including Samuel L. Jackson, Walton Goggins, Tim Roth, and Bruce Dern), at least one of whom is ready to slaughter everyone in order to collect The Hangman’s $10,000 bounty. Also, Michael Madsen plays a character nicknamed The Cow Puncher. What more could you want?
The Hateful Eight arrives this Christmas.
