Diplo has a history of phenomenal collabs with female vocalists under meta-moniker Major Lazer. Lazerproof, La Roux’s self-titled album remixed in 2010, usurped the “song of the summer” throne with a full summer soundtrack. Five years later, Diplo has done it again. “Lean On,” featuring Danish singer MØ — pronounced kind of like “moe” — was topping charts on Spotify before summer even hit.
The video for this infectious track confirms what most of Europe already knows: MØ is a star in the making. Aside from her self-evident skills in singing and songwriting, she’s got some sweet dance moves. Plus, she’s a babe.
What was your first encounter with Playboy?
It was the reality show with Hugh Hefner and his three girlfriends. I really liked the girls and I thought, “That’s so nice.”
What’s your pop culture blind spot?
I don’t know what Throwback Thursday is.
Okay. I’m gonna tell you right now. On Thursday if you want to post an old photo, it’s a throwback. Like, a picture from when you were a kid, or–
Every Thursday you can do that? That’s awesome.
Then you use the hashtag, #throwbackthursday.
I’m gonna do that every week now. Throwback Thursday, Mø, woo!
Do you have a go to karaoke song?
No, but I was just talking about it the other day. I would definitely go for all the Eminem songs. Because when you’re a singer it’s important that you don’t choose a song that you sing very well. So I would choose Eminem, because I can’t rap.
If you were on death row…
Death row, so like getting killed?
You’re gonna die tomorrow. What do you want your last meal to be?
I don’t think I would care. That’s a good question. I think I would have green spaghetti, the spinach spaghetti? With cocktail sausages. Small little sausages. That’s what me and my mom had when I was a child. So just to remind myself of good times, I’d just have that. I wouldn’t want anything fancy because I’m gonna die so it doesn’t matter anyway. I’ll just have that.
Do you have a celebrity crush?
No. I don’t want to talk about that. No, I don’t. There’s someone I really admire. There’s a lot of people I admire. I can give you an obvious one. Of course, I love Tyler the Creator because he’s so funny, and talented, but I love when people are funny. And he’s so nice. He’s one of the coolest people in the world.
What pisses you off?
When people are arrogant. I think that’s a really nasty way to behave. That’s the thing I hate the most. When people are arrogant.
What was the first song you knew all the words to?
Definitely Spice Girls. Even though it wasn’t the right words because I couldn’t speak English, but it was the song called “When Two Becomes One.” The words were wrong. I sang it, but I didn’t know what it meant.
What was the biggest lie you ever told?
I remember the first time I heard Sonic Youth I was totally falling in love with it. I told my boyfriend at that time, because I was so obsessed with Sonic Youth, I told him it was me and my band. “This is me singing.” I told him that, and he believed me. He was like, “I didn’t know you could sound like that.” He believed it.
