For most people, seeing a giant squid swimming near the shore would not be an invitation to jump in the water. But Akinobu Kimura isn’t like most people. The trained scuba diver and dive shop owner wasted no time after spotting the enormous creature floating in Japan’s Toyama Bay. And luckily, spectators with cameras were on hand to capture the encounter:
“My curiosity was way bigger than fear, so I jumped into the water and [went] close to it,” Kimura told CNN. “This squid was not damaged and looked lively, spurting ink and trying to entangle his tentacles around me.”
Kimura claims he was able to guide the confused squid out of the bay and back to deeper waters where such animals are more commonly found. In the process, he also managed to take some remarkable footage of the creature:
Kimura’s footage is even more remarkable when considering giant squids, which were previously thought to be mythical, were not captured on video until 2012.
