Beard or no beard? It’s the question every guy asks when they look at their face in the mirror every morning. Should I go for the rugged, lumberjack look? Or the chic, clean-shaven modern man? And more importantly, what would women want more?
To help answer this age-old debate, Gillette teamed up with Tinder to run an experiment. They selected 100,000 male users of the dating app and researched whether guys with unkempt facial hair or those with well-groomed or clean-shaven pictures did better in swipe results. The results showed ladies prefer smooth faces as they received 74% of total right swipes and earned 37% more matches.
Then again, maybe the clean shaven guys are just more handsome than their scruffy peers who are trying to hide their ugly mugs behind a bushel of hair. So Gillette decided to try an individual study. They selected guys and asked them to post bearded pictures for one week, then shave it all off and post clean-shaven pics the next week.
On average, the bearded subjects saw a 19% increase in right swipes after sharing their clean-shaven pics, with almost a quarter of participants getting a 60% increase. And people say personality’s all that matters…
For guys sporting handlebar mustaches or chin straps, these results might be worrisome. Just remember this: it’s not the beard that makes the man, but the man that makes the beard. But you should probably stop taking grooming tips from the folks at Duck Dynasty.
Also, this was sponsored by a shaving company. Perhaps someone should run an experiment where clean-shaven guys grow kickass beards in one week and see if their results improve.
