This summer, when they’re not busy saving the world from bad guys, our favorite super heroes are set for an epic battle for our dollars at the box office, which will be waged well into Christmas with as many as five comic book movies coming down the pike. But, it looks like Wonder Woman, Batman, Spider-Man and Thor will have to play second fiddle to a ragtag group of outcasts from outer space. At least that’s the consensus coming out of Los Angeles, where Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 just screened for members of the media who all seemed to agree: this movie absolutely rocks.

When the first Guardians came out back in 2014, it was bit of an outlier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Audiences were unfamiliar with the intergalactic exploits of Star-Lord and his merry band of space bandits, two of which were a talking raccoon and a walking tree. Tough sell. But, thanks to a winning blend of wit, nostalgia, and heart, Guardians became an unequivocal hit, Chris Pratt became a movie star, and Marvel suddenly had a brand new mega-franchise on its hands.

Hollywood, perhaps more so than anywhere else on the planet, operates under the belief that if something ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So, it’s no surprise that director James Gunn didn’t stray from the formula that made the first Guardians such a smash. Immediately after Monday’s screenings, critics flooded Twitter with superlatives like “emotional,” “gorgeous,” and “a helluva tearjerker” when describing what they had just seen. Erik Davis from Fandango even went so far as to suggest that some people will consider it their favorite Marvel film ever.

We’ll find out, when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5.
