When it comes to 2017’s big movies, space is the place. Just 24 hours after it was released last weekend, the teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had racked up 81 million views, making it the second biggest teaser trailer ever (behind Disney’s Beauty and the Beast) and Marvel’s most successful teaser yet.
“No kidding—I’m, like, floored,” director James Gunn shared on Facebook, where he confirmed the viewing numbers. He went on to thank the marketing departments at Marvel and Disney for “put[ting] up with all my eccentricities during the teaser editing process.” The director added, “Did I mention we debuted on a Saturday when you’re NEVER EVER supposed to debut anything?”
It wasn’t just the teaser, which showed Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana together again for the first time since 2014’s original Guardians that got people fired up: Sweet’s “Fox on the Run,” the song used in the trailer, rocketed to the top of the iTunes chart after the clip was released. Never underestimate the power of a talking raccoon.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will hit theaters May 5, 2017.
