The list of men’s style gawds is a fairly finite one. Steve McQueen and Paul Newman are the names that come up most often. More recently, guys like A$AP Rocky have been making waves. But those gentlemen have some decidedly animated competition. That’s because Gucci has made Donald Duck the face of a new capsule collection.
The Disney character with the nearly unintelligible quack appears on a number of pieces in Gucci’s spring/summer 2017 line. Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele has injected a fun, colorful and bold style into the venerable Italian house since taking over two years ago, and Donald Duck seems to be keeping up with that spirit.
The pieces are a diverse lot. There is a sweatshirt with Donald’s face sandwiched between “Gucci” in a Greek font and “Σέραπις” which translates to the name of the Greek god Serapis. For formal, yet fashion-forward, occasions, there is a suit depicting Donald as a pirate navigating a stormy sea. The character even appears on iconic Gucci items like the Princetown slippers and a tote bag adorned with the interlocking G monogram.
You’ll need Scrooge McDuck levels of cash to afford the items, however. The suit jacket costs $2,750 and the tote bag is $2,490. At those prices, a $750 Donald Duck Gucci T-shirt almost seems like a bargain. Almost.
