When you’re talking about a band like HAIM, the Los Angeles sister group, the customary adjectives to reach for are things like “beachy” or “sunny.” We suppose those adjectives aren’t completely out of hand – certainly they’re not a dark band – but these descriptors never seemed quite right. HAIM doesn’t evoke the carefree shore; instead, play them when lounging around the pool, getting ready to go out, or maybe arriving at a party minutes too late. In other words, they soundtrack a very thoughtful party, or sunburn that fades into a tan. Their first single off upcoming album Something to Tell You had the benefit of a Paul Thomas Anderson-directed video. This new one will have to stand on its own.

“Want you Back” borrows a title and a bit of the sound of the Jackson 5 song by (nearly) the same name. Nobody will confuse this for one of the best tracks of all time but it has a hook that sticks with you. The background vocals shimmer like the city lights staring down from Beverly Hills. The chorus sounds like something you could play on your phone while you’re having a picnic in the park. It might not be the song of the summer but it’s definitely a song of a summer.

The song is produced by Ariel Rechtshaid and premiered on MistaJam’s BBC Radio 1 show. Listen to it here.
