Get Behind the Eyes of ‘Hardcore Henry’ and More of the Week’s Hottest Trailers: STX Entertainment

STX Entertainment

Another week, another round of movie trailers to get excited about. This particular week, as with so many weeks as we head into the summer, you probably either ignored or forgot about some of these because every was talking about Spider-Man’s debut in the Captain America: Civil War trailer, but there are some real gems in here. We’ve got what could be the latest great performance from Tom Hanks, an attempt to make Christopher Walken heartwarming, a first-person action blowout, more from the Ghostbusters, and a glorious Nicolas Cage mustache. So, let’s get to it.

HARDCORE HENRY
Billed as the first feature film done entirely in first-person, Hardcore Henry was so buzzed-about at last year’s Tornoto Film Festival that it ignited a bidding war between distributors. Certain shots look innovative, while others look a video game, which means we could be headed for one of those films that’s more cinematic experiment than narrative achievement. Still, that shot of a man falling off a building in first-person is pretty great.

THE TRUST
Elijah Wood stars alongside Nicolas Cage and Nicolas Cage’s mustache in this buddy cop movie about to crooked police officers, bored with their day jobs, attempting to find the source of a heroin ring and rob them blind. We give Nicolas Cage a lot of crap for seemingly taking just about any movie job thrown his way, but this looks legitimately fun.

MIDNIGHT SPECIAL
Jeff Nichols has already wowed critics with dramas like Take Shelter and Mud, and this year he’s reteaming with collaborator Michael Shannon for his first sci-fi film, about a gifted boy and his family on the run from government agents and religious extremists. It’s a Nichols film, so you know the performance will be great, and this trailer managed to give a nerd like me something sci-fi trailers often don’t: A sense of geniune curiosity.

GHOSTBUSTERS
We’ve already seen the trailer for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot, but the international trailer that came out this week offers us a better cut (though, sadly, at the expense of Kate McKinnon) and more footage. We get a better sense of Chris Hemsworth’s place in the film, and some fantastic Leslie Jones moments. Haters be damned, I’m looking forward to this.

A HOLOGRAM FOR THE KING
Tom Hanks stars in this Dave Eggers adaptation about a man who loses it all and tries to revive his life by going to Saudi Arabia in an attempt to sell the King a new type of holographic technology. Sure, the usual culture clash comedy stuff is there, but there’s also something deeper at work, and you know Hanks can sell it.

ONE MORE TIME
This year Christopher Walken joins the massive fraternity of distinguished older actors (Robert DeNiro did it last year with The Intern) who get to play mentor figure to a directionless young star. This time that young star is Amber Heard, an apparently talented singer with no real drive. Walken, an aging lounge singer looking for a comeback, decides to teach her about life. It could be very predictable, but just hearing Walken say “The Flaming Lips” charmed me enough to be interested.
