Sipping a large glass of wine can do as much damage to the liver as tossing back three shots of vodka, according to the U.K.’s National Health Service.

A 250mL glass of wine has three units of alcohol, which equals the alcohol content of three shots of vodka.

“A large glass of wine is like three shots of vodka, so it is very easy for people to pour a glass and have no idea how much they are drinking,” says Duncan Selbie, chief executive of Public Health England.

Health officials say an epidemic of liver diseases are brewing due to people’s ignorance about how much alcohol they’re consuming, according to Metro U.K..

Liver disease is currently the third biggest killer of working age adults after heart disease and self-harm, according to Selbie, who added that about 75 percent of people being diagnosed with liver cirrhosis once they’re admitted to the hospital.

Additionally, liver disease kills five times as many among working age people than it did in the 1970s, according to Selbie.
