For Vidal Valladares of Houston, Texas, things have been all down hill since he got engaged. And while that’s true for many men, Valladares’ problems stem from the manner in which he popped the question rather than the prospect of life-long monogamy. Maybe he should have checked out these wedding decorations beforehand.

Authorities charged Valladares with “obstruction of highway” after a video of him blocking traffic in the middle of Interstate 45 for a wedding proposal was uploaded to his now-fiancee’s Instagram account. Footage of the proposal (as well as the angry drivers who were blocked) can be seen below:

And here’s a video of the couple explaining why they thought blocking off traffic in the middle of an interstate was a good idea:

Even before charges were filed, Valladares was forced to defend himself on local new outlets in the face of a growing social media backlash.

“I’m wanting to apologize to everyone if I caused any problems,” Mr. Valladares Navas said. “That wasn’t my intention in the beginning. I just wanted to do something different.”

Valladares’ was only charged with a misdemeanor, but still faces a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a possible $2,000 fine. But despite the mounting backlash and potential jail time, at least he knows his stunt impressed the right person. As Valladares’ fiancee wrote in the video’s caption, “Best moment ever and I am so happy.”
