With fall comes the start of layering season. Some days it can be 40 degrees when you leave the house in the morning and 75 when you come home, or vice verse. So it’s important to have the right layers that you can add or shed as needed to stay looking sharp.
At this time of year, there is no more versatile layer than the vest. It looks good with just about everything, keeps you warm but not too warm and can go over or under other clothes with ease. The fact that the lack of sleeves allows you to show off the guns is just a bonus.
To keep you flexing this fall, we found nine great vests that will have you layering in style.
1. AETHER SPACE VEST
When you hold this vest, the first thing you notice is how light it is. It’s hard to believe something so light can still be so warm. The shell has a polished finish that still looks sharp over a suit jacket and packs down into a small package that’s easy to stuff in your bag.
2. FAHERTY QUILTED CHAMBRAY VEST
Faherty was founded by twin brothers with a shared love of the beach. And this vest, with its contrasting natural indigo dyed pockets, lining, and shell is the ideal piece to wear to a fall beach bonfire after all the crowds have headed home.
3. PATAGONIA SNAP-T VEST
The Snap-T pullover is one of the most beloved jackets that Patagonia has ever produced, so it only makes sense to turn it into an equally awesome vest. Constructed from recycled fleece, it has a full zip, but still retains the iconic chest flap pocket that made the Snap-T so famous.
4. BELSTAFF WAISTCOAT
Originally designed to be snapped into Belstaff’s super cool motorcycle jackets like the Roadmaster, this waistcoat can also stand on its own. The diamond quilted lining keeps you warm and has a refined style. It’s got a slim cut that allows you to use it as a layering piece without looking like the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man.
5. TS(S) BLACK BOA VEST
The buttons on this vest from Japanese brand TS(S) give it more of an old world appeal. And the shearling fleece lining will keep you plenty warm on chilly days while the more refined pattern on the outside gives it a more pulled together look.
6. PENFIELD ROCKWOOL VEST
You won’t mind being black and blue with this vest. Modeled after Penfield’s Rockwool jacket, it is stuffed with down that is cozy without being bulky and has leather shoulders and a real shearling collar that look as great in the city as they do in the great outdoors.
7. BEAMS PLUS M-43 VEST
Inspired by classic military apparel, this vest has a timeless appeal. The lack of a collar creates a distinct and modern silhouette that stands out when you throw it over a button down or sweater.
8. CARHARTT WIP VEST
If there’s one thing Carhatt knows, it’s how to make durable workwear. The Carhartt WIP line takes that same know-how and combines it with more modern styling. The pattern on this quilted vest is one of the cooler camo prints we’ve seen.
9. TIMBERLAND BOLTON VEST
Incorporating Harris Tweed wool, the famous textile which has been woven by hand in Scotland using traditional methods for hundreds of years, this vest is able to endure the harshest of elements. But the corduroy collar and twill lining insure that you stay comfortable inside.
