Stepping up the graphics on a Legend of Zelda title is a tough proposition: one the one hand, the sword-swinging action of the games can benefit from gritty, realistic visuals, and on the other hand, the series is known for also being a whimsical, bird-riding, time-traveling romp.
Australian artist Ioannis Papazis captures a sweet middle ground between the two in the above video, in which he recreates Kakariko Village, an iconic location from the beloved N64 game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Papazis takes the power of Unreal Engine 4 and marries it with a little artistic whimsy, and the result is pretty gorgeous. Feel free to take notes, Nintendo.
Next we’ll have to get Papazis working on a gritty, realistic look at the vengeful, homicidal chickens that populate the Zelda world. Kakariko is incomplete without them.
