A sequel to Independence Day— easily one of the most fun sci-fi movies of the 1990s—has long been discussed. Then there was talk of it coming to fruition, though still feeling like a fever dream of “only 90s kids,” who apparently remember everything. But it’s really happening, with proof being today’s sneak-attack trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence, which already has us hyped for summer blockbuster infamy.

Nearly every actor and actress that had a character alive and kicking at the end of the first flick is back, along with a few new ride-or-dies. The noticeable (and much discussed) exception is Will Smith. Though his character’s wife (once again played by Vivica A. Fox) and son are in the sequel, director Roland Emmerich explained to Cinema Blend that Smith just wasn’t down for it.

“In the very beginning, I wanted to work with him and he was excited to be in it but then after a while he was tired of sequels, and he did another science fiction film, which was his father-son story, so he opted out.”

That father-son story Emmerich mentions was After Earth, an insanely panned movie directed by M. Night Shyamalan. So it’s like Smith passed on a super-fun, totally satisfying gastropub meal that everyone’s looking forward to because he for some reason traveled back in time to eat at Guy Fieri’s zero-star restaurant in Times Square first and now feels sick.
