Kellyanne Conway is no longer the only platinum blonde with prime office space in the White House’s West Wing. According to Politico, Ivanka Trump will be getting some fancy new digs right above the Oval Office, where she’ll serve as an unofficial adviser to President Trump.
To be clear: With absolutely no background in politics, and without being officially sworn in to office or vetted by a committee, Trump’s oldest daughter will be issued a government phone and will receive the same security clearance as the federal government’s top officials.
As the news reverberated throughout Washington, it felt both surprising and inevitable. When Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner moved their family to Washington DC after her father’s inauguration, she made it very clear that she didn’t intend to take a formal position in her father’s administration. But increasingly, Ivanka has been attending crucial meetings, including a recent sit down with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
So what changed?
Well, with the White House in full-blown crisis mode, and a president who seems to be imploding in front of our eyes, perhaps Trump is hoping that his daughter will be a stabilizing presence in an administration under siege. Though she won’t receive a salary, Ivanka’s lawyer, Jamie Gorelick, says she’ll serve as her father’s “eyes and ears,” while providing “broad-ranging advice, not just limited to women’s empowerment issues.”
And while the Trump scion won’t be held to the same ethical standards as official government employees are, she did say that she’ll do her best work within the federal government’s ethical guidelines. “I will continue to offer my father my candid advice and counsel, as I have for my entire life,” Ivanka said in a statement. “While there is no modern precedent for an adult child of the president, I will voluntarily follow all of the ethics rules placed on government employees.”
By not accepting an official White House position, but getting all the perks that go along with it minus the accountability, Ivanka gets to keep her business, and her father avoids breaking any anti-nepotism laws.
It’s no wonder people are pissed:
Ivanka into the White House? It’s like a coup, and the dictator’s family is moving into the palace as it prepares to the loot the country.— Robert Reich (@RBReich) March 21, 2017
Ivanka is seeking national security clearance? Someone tell me what qualifies her for this. GO. And how is this not an official position.— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) March 20, 2017
If taxpayers are giving Ivanka Trump office space we have every right to know what she’s doing with it.— Amanda Carpenter (@amandacarpenter) March 20, 2017
Who the hell is Ivanka Trump to receive a security clearance? Get this family of grifters out of our White House already.— Matt Murphy (@MattMurph24) March 20, 2017
Can someone explain Ivanka has a formal role in the White House now but it doesn’t have a name or a job description?— Schooley (@Rschooley) March 21, 2017
The Trump family behave like classic third world Kleptocrats. And they do so with a brazenness and openness few thought possible in the U.S. https://t.co/h4cTOCQWuK— Joy Reid (@JoyAnnReid) March 20, 2017
