As awesome as the movie Top Gun is, it can’t hold a candle to the pilots that take part in the real deal. That’s why when IWC wanted to partner with someone on a pilot’s watch, they went with the super selective naval flight school.
Officially, the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School course is called “Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor,” but everyone knows it as Top Gun, especially after Maverick and Goose had their need for speed in the 1986 movie of the same title. IWC has worked with Top Gun since 2007, but the latest iterations of the watches were just revealed at the SIHH watch show in Geneva.
There are three timepieces in the collection—a Big Pilot’s Watch Top Gun, a Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Top Gun, and a Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun. They are the ideal solution for the man who wants a minimalist, yet distinctive, design with the most precise timkeeping functionality. All have a stark black and white dial that is incredibly easy to read at a glance, and a new embossed leather strap. The Big Pilot’s Watch Top Gun and Chronograph have each seen their case size reduced to 44 millimeters from 46, a signal of the trend towards smaller watches.
Some of the more ostentatious elements of earlier editions, such as a second hand in the shape of a red fighter jet, have been done away with in favor of cleaner elements. The Top Gun engraving on the back of each case is smartly integrated without being too loud. If the Russian Mig pilot had seen this on Maverick’s wrist when he flipped the bird, perhaps the Cold War would have ended sooner.
