David Simon is a great chronicler of cities at critical moments in their histories. He did it with Baltimore and The Wire. He did it with New Orleans and Treme. Now Simon’s teaming with longtime collaborator George Pelecanos (a fantastic crime novelist who also worked on both Treme and The Wire) for The Deuce, a look at New York City amid the rise of legal porn in the 1970s.

The first teaser for the series debuted Wednesday and it’s basically just a flurry of evocative images: Prostitutes, drugs, cops, disco and the gritty Times Square of decades past. As with all Simon/Pelecanos projects, though, there’s something deeper at work here. The Deuce will chronicle a changing New York City through the eyes of mob-connected twin brothers (James Franco in dual roles) and a prostitute hoping to cash in on the porn boom (Maggie Gyllenhaal). It’s about porn, yes. It’s also about the rise of drugs, the looming threat of HIV, crime, sex and a city on the verge of a real estate shift that will transform Manhattan.

In other words, if you were waiting for David Simon’s incisive and brilliant pen to turn toward the Big Apple, the wait is almost over.

The Deuce arrives September 10 on HBO.
