Let’s hope Jared Leto’s on-screen presence is as wild and intense as his method acting, because he just sent his Suicide Squad co-stars a whole lot of weird things. For starters, the cast as a whole was on the receiving end of a dead hog and a video showing Leto in character as the Joker.
“The video he showed is in character. It blew our minds away. Then we realized that day, this is real,” said Adam Beach, who plays Slipknot in the film.
There’s more, of course. Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) scored a sort-of-love letter complete with a black box keeping a live rat, and Will Smith (Deadshot) was also sent a letter—and some bullets.
“I haven’t seen [Leto], since we started working, out of character,” said Jai Courtney, who plays Captain Boomerang.
“I don’t think any of us are naïve to the pressure he’s under,” he added, referring to Heath Ledger’s universally acclaimed performance as the Clown Prince of Crime in The Dark Knight.
The method acting is by no means new for Leto, who gained attention for his 60-pound weight gain to play John Lennon’s killer, Mark David Chapman, in Chapter 27 as well as the 30-pound weight loss and 24 hours a day in drag for his turn as a transsexual with AIDs in Dallas Buyers Club.
The blockbuster about villains-turned-sorta-heroes is due in theaters next summer.
