John Oliver hasn’t really gone after presidential candidate Donald Trump (to avoid feeding the national tire fire), but last night the Last Week Tonight host went for it in a stunning (and amusing) breakdown of why Trump isn’t fit for office. As Oliver points out, Trump’s knowledge, empathy and basic decency can easily be called into question, yet the most problematic quality is the candidate’s straight up lack of truth. For a candidate on his way to the Republican nomination, known to his supporters for “telling it like it is,” having Politifact deem 76 percent of 77 statements as mostly inaccurate or total lies is bad for business.
Calling back to a Trump tweet that blasted Jon Stewart for not keeping his original last name of Leibowitz and being proud of his heritage, Oliver decided to pull a similar move. Trump’s ancestor changed the family name from Drumpf, which Oliver sees as significantly less powerful for the mogul-candidate. And thus the Oliver-created campaign “Make Donald Drumpf Again” was born with a hashtag #MakeDonaldDrumpfAgain, website and Chrome extension.
