I, like many Archer viewers, have often wondered who would play Sterling Archer in a live-action adaptation. It’s a conversation (and sometimes furious debate) I’ve had with friends, and that seems to be a recurring dialogue between show creator Adam Reed, lead voice actor H. Jon Benjamin, and the rest of the production team. However, the difference here, according to executive producer Matt Thompson, is that they already agree who would play the world’s greatest (and most obnoxious) spy: Jon Hamm.
THOMPSON: “Adam is always like, ‘I don’t know if I want the movie to be live-action because I want it to be Jon Benjamin!’ But if it is live-action — and if it is not Jon Benjamin — it is our greatest hope that it would be Jon Hamm. I can say that with confidence.”
Hamm’s actually been on the show, playing Captain Murphy, the possibly deranged commander of an undersea laboratory, back in the fourth season. The guy, despite being most known for a dramatic no-nonsense lead in Mad Men, Hamm has proved his impeccable comedic chops time and time again, from charming know-nothing Dr. Drew Baird 30 Rock to scene-stealing lothario Ted in Bridesmaids. But how likely is a live-action Archer film anyway?
THOMPSON: “It’s all up to whatever Adam wants to do, but he and I have definitely talked about it. I think we talk about it once every two years. We vacillate between if you do it, why are you doing the TV show? And should it be live-action, or should it be cartoon? The talk is there, we just still haven’t decided. I don’t think there will be a movie before the last episode of Archer airs on TV. I don’t think we’ll make a movie before the series finishes.”
So there’s at least some consolation to the series ending. But I think we can all agree that Jon Hamm playing Archer with assumed H. Jon Benjamin vocal overdubs is totally…uh…I swear I had something for this…oh yeah, SPLOOSH.
