After taking over for Craig Kilborn, Jon Stewart has been the guiding force behind Comedy Central’s The Daily Show for 16 years. He took the SNL Weekend Update model of skewering current events from behind a news desk and transformed it — turning The Daily Show into an indispensable part of the media landscape.
And now he’s leaving.
At the taping for today’s episode, Stewart apparently broke the news to his staff, prompting Comedy Central to release the following statement:
Thank you Jon. pic.twitter.com/yPdxjnkuLw— Comedy Central (@ComedyCentral) February 10, 2015
No word on when he’ll leave and what he’ll do next. But a grateful nation turns its lonely eye to you, Jon Stewart.
Marc Bernardin is the Deputy Editor of Playboy.com. He’s sad he never got to see a Daily Show taping.
