Key & Peele is over after five seasons of brilliance, and though its stars have promised they’ll still be doing projects together in the future, there’s a hole in our comedy hearts. Still, it’s exciting to think about what these mega-talented people will do next, and for Jordan Peele, it’s a big departure from his hit TV show: a horror movie.
Variety reports that Peele is set to write and direct Get Out, a horror film about a black man who visits his white girlfriend’s family estate. Nothing more about the plot has been revealed, but Peele does promise the film will, like Key & Peele, explore issues of race, which sort of points us in the right story direction.
“People know me for my work in comedy, but now I’ll get to focus on my passion for writing and directing horror films. Like comedy, horror has an ability to provoke thought and further the conversation on real social issues in a very powerful way,” Peele said. “Get Out takes on the task of exploring race in America, something that hasn’t really been done within the genre since Night of the Living Dead 47 years ago. It’s long overdue.”
Get Out doesn’t have a release date yet, but we won’t have to wait long for more of Peele’s work. He and Keegan-Michael Key will team up in the comedy film Keanu next spring, reminding us at least one more time how great they are together.
