#KamaSutraSundays: Captain K9:

“A man acting according to the inclinations of a girl should try to gain her over so that she may love him and place her confidence in him. A man does not succeed either by implicitly following the inclination of a girl, or by wholly opposing her, and he should therefore adopt a middle course.” - The Kama Sutra, Part III, Chapter II: Of Creating Confidence in the Girl.

Last week we posited that the Kama Sutra was a little bit more than a long-form Sanskrit sex position chart, and the above quotation speaks to our claim: confidence is the foundation, the backbone if you will, upon which all new-age pickup advice and dating hullaballoo are built.

Just ask Nick Savoy, Love Systems’ President and author of Playboy.com’s dating advice column, The Pickup:

“You probably already know that women love confidence in a man. While a lot of what ‘everybody knows’ about women and attraction is actually wrong, confidence is one of the few places where conventional wisdom is right on target. [Of all the things that can improve your] odds of attracting beautiful women, confidence is probably the most important.”

If we’re reading this right, the teachings of the Kama Sutra suggest the best course of action to exude confidence (and in turn elicit confidence from her) is to not indulge her every flight of fancy (though you may be inclined to win her over) but rather to, in modern parlance, play a little hard to get.

But not too hard; “wholly opposing her,” otherwise known as “being a dick,” might appeal to a certain niche but by and large is not what one might call a turn-on.

We suggest walking the fine line: “Ask her what she’s got going for herself or what she does for fun, and don’t rush to compliment every answer. Even if you’re already sold, act like you’re still browsing.”
