“Hold on to yo’ lily-white butts!”
With those words, Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner got a whole lot more interesting. Near the end of his own remarks to the audience of politicians, press, and celebrities — during which he joked about everything from Joe Biden’s shoulder rubs to Donald Trump just refusing to go away — President Obama brought out a special guest to bring it on home: His anger translator, Luther, played by Keegan-Michael Key.
Normally when Key does this character on Key & Peele, he’s doing it with his partner Jordan Peele impersonating the president, but he clearly wasn’t intimidated by backing up the real deal. He jumped, he kicked, he let Fox News have it, and he gave Hillary Clinton the best campaign slogan she’s ever likely to get: “Khaleesi is comin’ to Westeros!”
The only way this could be better is if after the event, Key and Peele got into their valet character costumes, stood outside the Washington Hilton and shouted “What about Rachel Maddows, tho?!”
