Keira Knightley On Why She Posed Topless: ‘Women’s Bodies Are A Battleground’

Keira Knightley On Why She Posed Topless: ‘Women’s Bodies Are A Battleground’:

Keira Knightley has always been candid about her physique, and about how Hollywood has chosen to accept or, in some cases, alter what God gave her. In a 2012 interview with Allure magazine, she had some words for the marketing team behind 2004’s King Arthur:

“For King Arthur, for a poster, they gave me these strange droopy tits… A) I don’t have tits anyway, and B) they digitally made them, and I thought, ‘Whoaaaaa! It’s my face on that poster.’ I thought 'Well, if you’re going to make me fantasy breasts, at least make perky breasts.’”

Now, in the wake of the celebrity cell-phone hacking scandal that resulted in Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and scored of other female celebs’ nude photos being released into the world, Knightley has decided to own her naked body in a very public way. She’s posed topless for Interview magazine, in a shoot by fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier.

She explained her reasons to the Times UK:

“I think women’s bodies are a battleground and photography is partly to blame. It’s much easier to take a picture of somebody without a shape; it simply is. Whereas actually you need tremendous skill to be able get a woman’s shape and make it look like it does in life, which is always beautiful. But our society is so photographic now, it becomes more difficult to see all of those different varieties of shape. … I’ve had my body manipulated so many different times for so many different reasons, whether it’s paparazzi photographers or for film posters, and [the Interview shoot] was one of the ones where I said: ‘OK, I’m fine doing the topless shot so long as you don’t make them any bigger or retouch.’ Because it does feel important to say it really doesn’t matter what shape you are.“
