With just a few days left until the release of Kendrick Lamar’s new album, details about the follow-up to 2015’s To Pimp a Butterfly are finally coming into focus.
On Tuesday, the Compton rapper took to Instagram and revealed that his fourth studio album is called DAMN.. He also unveiled the artwork and the track list; a collection of 14 songs with one-word titles like “Lust,” “Pride,” and the previously released “Humble”. As for guests, Lamar could have any act in the world, so he went ahead and recruited two of the biggest: Rihanna, who’s featured on a song called “Loyalty,” and U2, who appear on the track “XXX”.
The album’s artwork meanwhile, is a stark departure from the vivid, highly produced sleeve of TPAB. Here, Kendrick stands against a brick wall, clad in a white tee and looking morose AF, with the word “DAMN” scrawled across the top in bold red lettering. It’s a meme just waiting to happen.
In a recent interview with T magazine, Lamar described his new album as “urgent,” and explained that he’s turning his focus back to his community, and other communities around the world “where they’re doing the groundwork.”
Lamar also explained that DAMN. is meant to be a celebration of women. “We love women, we enjoy their company. At one point in time I may have a little girl who grows up and tells me about her engagements with a male figure — things that most men don’t want to hear,” he said. “Learning to accept it, and not run away from it, that’s how I want this album to feel.”
