Kim Davis, the clerk who is refusing to issue marriage licences to gay couples in Rowan County, Kentucky, has been arrested after a federal judge found her in contempt of court.
Judge David L. Bunning ordered Davis to be held until she agrees to issue the licences, saying that a simple fine would be insufficient to compel her compliance because someone would likely pay it on her behalf.
“The court cannot condone the willful disobedience of its lawfully issued order,” said Bunning. “If you give people the opportunity to choose which orders they follow, that’s what potentially causes problems.”
Ms. Davis stated that due to her religious beliefs as an Apostolic Christian, “there was no choice there,” in regard to her decision to refuse to grant same-sex couples a licence. Previously, she has claimed she was acting “under God’s authority.”
