We live in a world of franchises—so many franchises that I can no longer be certain I’m not an unwitting extra in a tentpole blockbuster right this very minute. That means any recognizable piece of intellectual property that could be turned into a potential franchise will be, and director Guy Ritchie’s take on King Arthur is next up to the plate.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword follows a young man (Charlie Hunnam, in full smolder mode) who discovers he’s actually long-lost royalty when he pulls the legendary Excalibur from the stone. Armed with new clues to his lineage and an awesome magic sword, he joins the resistance movement against an evil king (Jude Law).

As cynical as the franchise machine can make me, I have to say this trailer had me hooked. Ritchie’s fast cutting, camera-speed-shifting action stye might be just the thing to spice up medieval action sequences, and I am so ready for Law, fresh off The Young Pope, to chew up all the scenery in that fur cape. Plus, set your trailer to a Zeppelin tune and I’m bound to lean in at least a little.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword arrives May 12.
