British wunderkind Lady Sovereign, for all her palpable rapping talent, star-power and Jay-Z endorsements, failed to launch when she debuted Stateside in 2006. Perhaps America still isn’t ready for or interested in a girl who can rap, though branding herself as a “midget” and being butcher than your average teen pop icon could have had as much to do with it. Now Sov’s starting anew, this time on her own label and her own terms, with her sophomore comeback. No longer hell-bent on proving herself (we know she can take all comers), she’s stopped rapping and started—well, it’s not quite singing either. Jigsaw ditches the sharp angles of grime for Cure samples and bubbly blasts of synth—a template that more than resembles Lily Allen’s first album. Its made-for-the-club sticky-sweetness buoys Sov's tales of fleeting fame and woe, though fortunately, she’s still as cheeky and attitudinal as ever. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mar 22, 2010
