Throughout her career, Lana Del Rey has constructed a dense lyrical universe, rife with symbolism, metaphors and mythology. But for her new song “Lust for Life,” the title track from her upcoming album, Del Rey isn’t beating around the hydrengea bush.
The just-released music video for the Weeknd-assisted song is a literal interpretation of its most vivid lyric, in which Del Rey sings about dancing on top of the “H” of the Hollywood sign with her man.
Here, Abel Tesfaye plays her man and the Hollywood sign is more like a Hollywood soundstage. But the effect is the same. Like the lyric itself, the visual is striking, evocative and like all things in the LDR multiverse, heavy on the nostalgia.
The release of the “Lust for Life” video suggests that we’re inching closer to the release of Del Rey’s hugely anticipated album. We already know to expect the likes of Courtney Love and Sean Lennon on the album.
On Sunday, Del Rey revealed details about another collaboration with rock royalty.
During an interview with KROQ, Del Rey discussed her collaboration with Stevie Nicks called “Beautiful People, Beautiful Problems,” which is set to appear on her new record. “She’s everything you hope she’s gonna be. She’s so contemporary, and she knows all the new music that’s out weekly,” Del Rey said of Nicks. “She loved the track and she added so much to it.”
So does this mean we can expect to see Del Rey and Nicks join forces for a music video as well? Fingers crossed. For now, watch Lana Del Rey and The Weeknd do their best La La Land impression in the “Lust For Life” video, below.
