When Lana Del Rey isn’t spontaneously writing new songs in the woods, she’s laying down tracks in the studio with some of the biggest names in music. On Wednesday, Del Rey stopped by BBC Radio 1, and premiered the title track from her upcoming album, Lust For Life.
The song finds Del Rey squarely in her dream pop comfort zone, as she sings “My boyfriend’s back, and he’s cooler than ever,” over jangly, 60s-inspired arrangements.
So, who’s the mystery man Del Rey is singing about? Well, it could be The Weeknd, who once again joins Del Rey for some vocal sparring. Though the frequent collaborators definitely aren’t dating (The Weeknd is shacked up with Selena Gomez at the moment) they’re kind of like musical boyfriend/girlfriend. “Lust For Life” marks their fourth song together (the others being “Prisoner” from The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind The Madness and “Party Monster” and “Stargirl Interlude” from his follow up, Starboy). They’re the Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling of pop, plus some drugs and actual singing ability. No matter where their separate careers may take them, they always find their way back to each other.
And with good reason. These are two of our most unique vocalists, working at the height of their powers. Throw in super-producer Max Martin, who Del Rey said helped her arrange the track, and what we have here is bona fide hit. While Del Rey stopped short of revealing the release date for her fifth studio album, this latest offering certainly bodes well.
