The upcoming drama series Legion is one of the more visually and narratively unusual takes to date on a comic book superhero—enough so that FX just put out a first-look clip to warm viewers up to just how disorienting it will be. “This is a show about a man named David Haller who has been diagnosed as a schizophrenic,” creator Noah Hawley says in the behind-the-scenes clip. “He begins to get the sense that he may not be crazy.” Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) plays Haller—the son of X-Men founder Professor X—with a impish wink, and you’re never quite sure if he’s sure what’s real and what isn’t.

Legion premieres February 8 on FX.
