Owning a pet can richly enhance your life in so many ways, but it can also be a bit exhausting at times. There are times when you swear it seems like more work having a pet than it does having a child. To make your pet parenthood a bit less stressful, here are 22 tips and tricks that may just blow your mind. Your dog would thank you for it if he could talk, but he can’t, so just take my word for it.

  1. A cheap and easy way to get pet urine out of your carpet is baking soda. Simply pour it over the accident spot, let it sit, and then vacuum it up.

  2. You can also make your own flea shampoo with household items you probably already own. Just mix a cup of Dawn liquid detergent, a cup of vinegar, and a quart of water.

  3. Do you have a dog that eats way too fast and makes himself sick? Put a ball in his food and it’ll force him to slow down since he’ll have to keep moving the ball around to get to his food.

  4. Instead of putting your dog’s name on his tag, just put your phone number. That way you’re the only one that knows his name, which will make it harder for someone to steal him.

  5. If your dog is suffering from constipation, give him some plain canned pumpkin and it’ll help get his system going.

  6. Instead of trying to vacuum up all that pet hair, try using a squeegee over your carpet to remove all the loose hair.

  7. You can also remove pet dander and loose hair from your dog by rubbing an all-natural dryer sheet over his fur.

  8. An easy way to remove dog hair from your couch is by dampening a rubber glove and running it over the pillows.

  9. If you have a lap dog, you can stuff an old pair of jeans to simulate a lap for your dog to lie on while you’re not home.

  10. Use a sealed plastic dispenser to store his food instead of leaving it in the bag. That way it’ll stay fresh longer and it’s easier to pour into his bowl.

  11. During the summer, put chicken broth and apple slices into an ice tray and freeze them. That way your dog can have a frozen treat you know they’ll eat and enjoy.

  12. Prevent your dog from getting an earache from baths by putting cotton balls with a little baby oil on them in his ears before each bath. Alternatively you can use a shower cap.

  13. If your dog has an upset stomach try putting a little low-sodium chicken broth into his drinking water.

  14. Try to do your longer walks in the early morning or evening during summer hours to prevent your dog from getting his paws damaged as a result of hot pavement.

  15. During the winter months your dog’s paws can get cracked and damaged from walking outside in the cold. Put a little Vaseline on their paws to keep them safe and healthy.

  16. If your dog gets loose, the worst thing you can do is run after him. He’ll just keep running. Instead, run in the opposite direction and see if you can get him to chase you.

  17. If your dog has eaten something dangerous and you need him to throw it up to prevent a serious issue, you can induce vomiting by giving him a teaspoon of peroxide for every five pounds he weighs. He’ll appreciate it in the long run.

  18. If your dog has a habit of chewing on cords, wipe some bitter apple spray on it. It’s a safe way to repel them from chewing on dangerous or valuable cords.

  19. Remember that chocolate isn’t the only harmful item for dogs to eat. Other toxic foods include grapes, peaches, garlic, onions, and alcohol.

  20. You can easily freshen your dog’s breath by mixing bits of parsley in with his regular food.

  21. You can also put dog toothpaste onto their favorite toy so they can clean their mouths while playing.
