We’ve all heard a woman say, “I love a man in uniform.” (Or at least seen one say it in a movie.) And it’s easy to see why. Military attire is the perfect mix of form and function. It also happens to come in an always-on-trend color palette. It’s no wonder that menswear designers are constantly looking to military uniforms and attire as a source of inspiration.
We selected some of the best items for the newest Lookbook.
1. TODD SNYDER DANTE MILITARY SHIRT
The vintage wash on this durable cotton shirt lends it a perfectly broken-in feel. You’ll look like you’ve been somewhere exotic, even if you haven’t left your apartment in months.
2. I LOVE UGLY MILITARY PANTS
Despite the brand name, these pants are anything but ugly. The slim, tapered profile and the drawcord cuffs insure that these pants will lay perfectly over your shoes. The cargo side pockets add a classic military element that is highly functional.
3. TIMEX FOR J.CREW VINTAGE FIELD ARMY WATCH
J.Crew found this watch in the Timex archives and brought it back to life. The dial has a slightly weathered feel and an olive-colored nylon strap that pairs well with everything from a suit to a plain white T-shirt.
4. RANDOLPH ENGINEERING AVIATOR II SUNGLASSES
These are true aviators, as in they were made for pilots in the U.S. military. That means they can stand up to more than you can dish out. The square-ish frames and amber top bar have a timeless look and the fact that they are made in the U.S. is an added bonus.
5. VISVIM ACHSE JACKET
This coat from Japanese label Visvim blends a number of different iconic military silhouettes and is an ideal weight for spring. The lapel is reminiscent of a peacoat, while the body is more like an M-65 jacket. The fine craftsmanship is evident in the hand-painted insignia on the sleeve.
6. COLE HAAN LUNARGRAND NEOPRENE WINGTIP
Sometimes just a little bit of military-inspiration is all you need, as is the case with these wingtips. Cole Haan’s Lunargrand sole was already ridiculously comfortable, but now they’ve added a neoprene sockliner so you can easily rock them without socks.
7. UNDEFEATED TRAINING CAMP TRUCKER HAT
Sneaker and streetwear boutique Undefeated is resurrecting the trucker hat from Von Douche hell. With laurels and a braided cord on the brim, this cap is worth saluting.
8. SSUR*PLUS PUMA CAMO CREW
One of the great things about camo is how versatile of a pattern it can be. For this crew neck sweatshirt (and we’re convinced you can never have too many crew neck sweatshirts), SSUR modeled its camouflage after the fur of a puma, which gives it a more luxe sensibility.
9. TOPO DESIGNS WEB BELT
A web belt is great for many reasons. It’s infinitely adjustable (which you’ll be thankful after destroying a pound of brisket and some beers). It’s absurdly tough. And it looks great with just about everything. The contrasting red buckle on this version from Topo Designs works great with the green webbing.
