I always thought flying cars were one of those hypothetical technological innovations that obviously sound awesome and game-changing and Jetsons-like in theory, but too far-fetched to actually exist in our lifetime. But I also never thought I’d be able to watch porn on my phone or see an eighth Fast and Furious movie, so fuck me, right? Like Kevin Garnett said, anything is possible.
Unless I’m missing something, we’re about to see a flying car soon. Like, really soon. AeroMobil, a Slovakian auto company, has announced plans to launch a commercially available half-car, half-airplane thing at the Top Marques supercar show in Monaco on 4/20. (Because nothing will blow a stoner’s mind quite like the sight of a FLYING CAR.) The goal of AeroMobil’s vehicle, per Inverse, isn’t to beat traffic, but to “help drivers fly over areas of Slovakia with missing or limited road infrastructure, while still working as a fully functional four-wheeled car.”
Apparently this thing has been in the works for over 20 years, which is comforting, because you don’t just whip up a flying car in a couple weeks or whatever. The last prototype of the vehicle, which was powered by a Rotax 912 gasoline engine and could reach 100 mph on land and 124 mph in the air(!), debuted two years ago in Vienna, according to Inverse. Safe to say the new version will contain considerable improvements.
Why aren’t more people making a bigger deal out of this? Even the guys who MADE A FLYING CAR are weirdly underselling it. “By combining aero and car functionality in perfect harmony, it heralds in a new era in efficient and exciting travel, offering users an unparalleled choice of transport on the road or in the air,” AeroMobil writes on its website. Well, yeah.
You know what’s “efficient and exciting?” A Keurig. This is most definitely more than “efficient and exciting.” AeroMobil, my dudes: You’re about to change the world. Use an exclamation point in your promotional copy. Use seven exclamation points. Use some dollar signs. Use some flame emojis. Keep it 100. Tell the entire planet that HOLY FUCKING SHITBALLS, WE MADE A FLYING CAR!!#!!$$@!🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 💯 You deserve it.
AeroMobil will start taking pre-orders later this year. For its flying car.
