During one of the many, many commercial breaks during Olympics coverage tonight, viewers will have a chance to dive into Marvel’s Luke Cage via the above trailer. The series, which premieres September 30, follows in the footsteps of Netflix’s gritty Daredevil and Jessica Jones and stars Mike Colter as a bulletproof badass—and Mahershala Ali as a scene-stealing kingpin who runs the Harlem underworld. When Cottonmouth, drenched in red light, stands in front of the picture of Biggie wearing the crown and says, “Everybody wants to be the king,” you know there will be blood. The trailer also introduces Cage’s mentor Pop (Frankie Faison), a crooked councilwoman (Alfre Woodard), a sexy cop (Simone Missick) and Cage’s landlady (Jade Wu), who runs Genghis Connie’s, which is far and away the best restaurant name ever.
The trailer follows a slew of announcements by Marvel and Netflix two weeks ago at San Diego ComicCon, including the renewal of Daredevil for a third season, a teaser trailer for Iron Fist, and a teaser trailer for The Defenders, which will group the stars of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist into a crime-fighting supergroup.
