Once upon a time, Ridley Scott delivered sci-fi masterpieces like Alien and Blade Runner, but recent efforts like Exodus: Gods and Kings and Prometheus have fallen well short of masterpiece status. Now, he seems primed to prove his glory days aren’t behind him with The Martian.
Based on the novel by Andy Weir, the film tells the story of astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon), who’s left stranded on Mars after a planetary storm forces the rest of his crew to evacuate the Red Planet. Presumed dead and without any way to contact NASA, Watney must do what he can to stretch a 31-day life support system into something that can keep him alive for four years, all the while trying to get a message to his crewmates that they still have a chance to rescue him.
The first trailer is absolutely gripping, and though we’ll have to see the whole film to know for sure, it feels like it could be Scott’s next triumph. The visuals are stunning, the cast — which includes Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig, Donald Glover, Mackenzie Davis, and more — is great, and the story is completely compelling.
The Martian lands in theaters on November 25.
