As a kid, there are always toys that are the holy grail. Depending on your socioeconomic status and/or your parents desire to spoil you rotten, you may have never actually owned them but you were definitely jealous as hell of the kids who did. For me, it was those electric Power Wheels Jeep. Even though a Big Wheel could smoke one downhill, the idea of being propelled by a force other than gravity or human exertion was enticing. But even those Jeep owners would be green with envy at the new electric ride from none other than McLaren.
The automaker, which is rumored to be the subject of an acquisition by Apple, announced its tiniest automobile yet: the McLaren P1 toy car. In its announcement, McLaren said the ride-on electric vehicle can go “from zero to maximum speed in just two seconds…to the tune of Hickory Dickory Dock.”
The toy version of the P1 shares the dihedral doors of its big brother (or as Silicon Valley’s Russ Hanneman would say, “Doors that open like this”). An MP3 player comes standard on the Volcano Yellow car, which has a three-speed transmission. Unlike the real P1, the toy car has a central driving position, reminiscent of the renowned McLaren F1. While that may make it easier to drive, it certainly makes it tough to pick up any lady kindergarteners when you’re out cruising the playground.
