If you grew up in the ‘90s and played video games, then you’ve played one of John Romero’s games. He’s one of the four founders of id Software, the company behind Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake.

Motherboard caught up with the video game godfather to find out what it was like creating such influential games. John designed the games that made first-person shooters what they are today, and from the mechanics to the multiplayer, his influence is evident across the medium.
