It’s summer! OK, maybe it isn’t really summer yet. But it is starting to feel like summer. And since when do you want it to not be summer and start getting all technical to prove a point? While summer doesn’t officially start until the summer solstice on June 20, Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of BBQ, beach, and bathing suit season. (Good things that start with a ‘b’ in summertime.)
To be fair, much of the country had a fairly mild winter thanks to the whole climate change thing and the planet getting ever-dangerously warmer. But summer is about more than temperatures. It’s a state of mind.
Of course, it’s understandable if you are out of summer shape. No, we’re not referring to six-pack abs. It’s more about having the right gear and clothes to survive all the eating, drinking, and gallivanting (lots of gallivanting). So to ensure you have a truly epic Memorial Day weekend, we pulled together this very necessary survival kit. Just make sure to save a hot dog for us.
1. YETI HOPPER 20
One of the best soft-sided coolers just got cooler (see what I did there?). The Yeti Hopper 20 now comes in field tan with olive and orange accents for a more outdoorsy look. It still holds 18 cans of beer in a rugged shell that is puncture-proof and resists mildew. And it will keep those beers cold for days, so no more skunked brews.
2. OAKLEY TEAM USA FROGSKINS
Oakley Frogskins have been a great wayfarer-style pair of sunglasses since the 80s. They’re built tough so you don’t have to be precious with them, but are lightweight and feel great on your face. To celebrate the Olympics, Oakley created this pair for Team USA that are a great way to rep the red, white, and blue without looking like Uncle Sam.
3. BATTENWEAR PACKABLE ANORAK
The anorak is back, jack. And this bright blue one from Battenwear is the perfect layer to throw on when the sun goes down or the wind picks up. The center zip pocket is a vastly superior place to stash your wallet and phone than your shorts because you’re far less likely to go into the pool in your anorak.
4. BEOPLAY A1 SPEAKER
Bang & Olufsen’s new portable Bluetooth speaker fits in the palm of your hand, which is a good thing because as soon as your friends see it they’ll probably try and snatch it from you. Weighing less than 1.5 pounds, the A1 delivers a peak power of 2 x 140 watts, which is more than enough to get the party bumping.
5. PILGRIM BEACH TOWEL
By this point in your life, you should know that taking a bath towel to the beach is a busted move. Pilgrim took the pennant from its logo and remixed it into a checkerboard print for this beach towel that is ridiculously soft and will have you dry in no time.
6. LEATHER AND CANVAS GAME ROLL
There is only so much lying around that one can do. At some point during the long weekend, it’s good to do some activity—just not one that’s too strenuous. Backgammon fits the bill perfectly and this handsome leather and canvas case is easy to bust out at a moment’s notice whenever anybody wants to step up and challenge you.
7. POLER TERRY FLINT SHIRT
Made of terry cloth, this shirt adds a little more weight, which will come in handy before we move into full-blown summer. It feels great against the skin and can also double as a towel in a pinch.
8. STUSSY JAMAICA BUCKET HAT
You can’t help but exude chill vibes with with “Stussy” and “Jamaica” printed on the hat band separated by palm trees. The mesh top keeps your head cool and ensures that those vibes have a place to escape.
