Video game movies are still fighting to reach that superhero level at the box office, and this year they’ll get two big chances. First, there’s Duncan Jones’ Warcraft, which lands next month, and then there’s Assassin’s Creed, the adaptation of the wildly popular video game series starring Michael Fassbender as a man on a mission through time.
Fassbender is Callum Lynch, a character created specifically for the film. After Callum is executed, therefore wiping his existence from the world at large, he is resurrected by the mysterious Abstergo Industries and introduced to the Animus, a machine that can tap into the collective memories of his ancestors. It is through the Animus that he’s transported back to the days of the Spanish Inquisition, and into the body of an ancestor who just happens to be a member of an order of assassins fighting the Knights Templar.
The trailer itself doesn’t give us much more than the initial premise, but visually it offers lots of the same flipping and kicking and rooftop jumping that fans of the game will be familiar with. Plus Marion Cotillard looking intense, Jeremy Irons looking more intense, and…a Kanye West song, for some reason.
Assassin’s Creed arrives December 16.
