The details about the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie adaptation, which will star Michael Fassbender, have been few and far between, but today we get the first look at what the star will look like, thanks to an exclusive from Yahoo. The outfit, above, hews pretty close to the game series’ always-a-little-obvious secret assassin robes.
Assassin’s Creed is a series of games about companies and individuals who use genetic memories and extensive computer simulations to relive the lives of their ancestors. Those ancestors were members of an ancient secret society of Assassins, who fight to protect the world from domination by another secret society called the Templars. The two groups have been fighting since before the Crusades.
Fassbender plays Callum Lynch, a character who hasn’t appeared in any of the Assassin’s Creed games, but who sounds a whole lot like the series’ original protagonist, Desmond Miles, according to Yahoo’s report:
Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day. In the games, Desmond also lived in the present and used genetic memories to experience the past lives of his ancestors, who all dressed a lot like Fassbender is above. So we might be seeing Fassbender playing both Lynch and Aguilar—or the movie might have another major protagonist whose casting we haven’t heard about yet.
Either way, Fassbender’s stabby costume does look rather badass, and it definitely sets a new bar for Comic-Con cosplayers.
