Michelle Pfeifer graces the cover of the April issue of Interview magazine, kicking off the long-awaited comeback of one of Hollywood’s most glamorous nineties screen sirens.

For her first cover story in years, the 58-year-old Pfeiffer sat down with Darren Aronofsky, who directed her in the upcoming home invasion thriller Mother!, alongside Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence. It’s one of handful of projects that Pfeiffer will appear in this year, including Kenneth Branagh’s Murder on The Orient Express, HBO’s Bernie Madoff movie The Wizard of Lies, and the Sundance darling Where is Kyra?

So what made Pfeiffer — who hasn’t acted in anything since 2013’s mob comedy The Family — want to resume her career? Well, according to the actress, it all came down to timing.

“I’ve never lost my love for acting,” she told Aronofsky. “I feel really at home on the movie set. I’m a more balanced person honestly when I’m working. But I was pretty careful about where I shot, how long I was away, whether or not it worked out with the kids’ schedule. And I got so picky that I was unhirable.” Pfeiffer added that as time went on, her frame of mind became more open, and she decided it was time to get back on the horse, now that she’s an “empty nester.”

The normally reclusive Pfeiffer also used the opportunity to reflect on one of her most iconic roles. “I’m very willful, you know. I’m a survivor. It’s in my nature. I don’t look so tough, but I am. And I think I was able to hide behind the tough exterior of that character, who was just sort of tuned out and tuned off, drugged,” she said of her breakout performance as the coked out trophy wife opposite Al Pacino in Brian De Palma’s Scarface. “I can tell you that I was terrified. And it was a six-month shoot, I think. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and I were really the only females. It was a boys’ club,” Pfeiffer added. “And it was also the nature of the relationship, for Tony Montana to be very dismissive of my character. So I would go to sleep some nights crying.”
