A couple in Bay City, Mich., had a much better New Year’s Eve than you… at least until they ended up in jail for allegedly stealing sex toys. But let’s back up a bit.

Police claim 25-year-old William J. Cornelius Jr. proposed to his 20-year-old girlfriend at a local Walmart. After purchasing a $29.62 engagement ring, Cornelius reportedly asked a Walmart employee to read his proposal over the public address system. Surveillance footage of the engagement shows the happy couple hugging and kissing as nearby shoppers and employees applaud. However, the footage also allegedly shows the newly-engaged woman celebrating by slipping unpurchased items into her purse.

But the celebration didn’t stop there. Later that evening police were called to a Spencer’s Gifts at the Bay City Mall after employees allegedly saw the same couple stealing from that store. Officers responding to the scene found the woman between a nearby Bob Evans and Taco Bell allegedly carrying a pair of stolen gold earrings and a silver necklace. She denied any involvement in the theft, claiming her fiancé was to blame, which probably wasn’t the best way for her to start off her new life with him.

Police also found Cornelius asleep at the mall’s food court, where he supposedly passed out while trying to tie his shoes. A search allegedly turned up over $80 worth of stolen merchandise, including an edible thong and, of course, sex toys.

Cornelius was charged with third-degree retail fraud and faces up to 93 days in jail. The woman was released on bail and has not yet been charged. I was going to call the Bay City police to get her name, but considering her fiancé is now famous for supposedly stealing sex toys, I figured I wouldn’t add insult to injury.
