Much like the summer movie season, the race for “Song of The Summer” begins in earnest long before you guzzle your first grapefruit radler on a sun-soaked patio. Last year’s consensus winner, Drake’s breezy, dancehall-inflected smash “One Dance” dropped in April and dominated the airwaves long after Labor Day. This year, a huge swath of pop music’s ruling class have already entered the fray, from Kendirck Lamar’s world-conquering salvo “Humble" to Miley Cyrus’ cheery, guitar-laced romp “Malibu.”
One artist who seems hell-bent on winning the belt is the visionary producer Mike WiLL Made-It, whose upcoming anthology Ransom 2 is chock full of so many summer heaters, it’s liable to break more than one thermostat in the coming months.
One of those contenders is “Perfect Pint,” a contagious posse track featuring a trio of hip-hop’s heaviest hitters. In the song’s just-released music video, Kendrick Lamar, Rae Sremmurd and Gucci Mane are caught in a drug-addled fever dream complete with kangaroos, dolphins, and a unicorn just for good measure.
Clearly MWMI understands that a playing field as competitive as this, having a song that begs for the removal of all clothing isn’t enough to wear the crown. You need a video that will generate all the GIFs, too, which he and director Nabil have definitely achieved with this psychedelic clip.
Even the song’s title conjures up images of boozy cookouts and hazy afternoon block parties. Is “Perfect Pint the “Perfect Pop song?” Hell no. Is it radio-friendly? Not unless you listen to 107 LEAN. But it is immensely catchy, meme-friendly, and has the potential to capture the summer zeitgeist based on its video alone.
In an era when all you need is a catchy slogan and a fancy helicopter to become POTUS, we’ll take it.
