The list of celebrity voice credits for the upcoming Minecraft: Story Mode is getting long. First we heard that Patton Oswalt would be playing the male version of lead character Jesse, and now there’s a host of other well-known actors and comedians joining the blocky, creeper-fighting ranks.
Possibly the coolest bits of casting news is Paul Reubens, best known for his long-running role as Pee-Wee Herman, as well as comedian John Hodgman, who played the PC to Justin Long’s Mac in that long-running Apple TV commercial campaign, was a Daily Show correspondent, and played Jason Schwartzman’s character’s nemesis on HBO’s underrated Bored to Death. And Catherine Taber, who has lent her voice to “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and games such as Final Fantasy XII, plays the female version of Jesse.
Lots of other notable voices will be coming out of low-res blockheads as well, like Billy West, a prolific voice actor probably best known for his work on “Futurama,” Ashley Johnson, who gamers will know from her starring turn in The Last of Us, and actors Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton from The Goonies (among other, less important things). There’s also Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights), comedian Brian Posehn (The Sarah Silverman Program) and voice actors Dave Fennoy (lead in Telltale’s The Walking Dead), Grey Griffin (Batman: Arkham City).
Minecraft: Story Mode will have some serious comedy chops when it tries to add some narrative to the world of the uber-popular building game. If there’s an Easter egg reference to The Spleen from Mystery Men, that’s an insta-buy.
